The famous Humphrey Repton, landscape Gardener, is buried in the church yard of St Michaels Church, the grave is enclosed with iron rails, and planted with roses and hearts-ease. 

The church has a 15th Century font with the arms of John of Gaunt on its shaft, there is also a monument to Humphrey Repton in the church. It is a Gothic structure, situated on the north side of the Market place, commanding an extensive and picturesque view of the surrounding country. St Michaels has a square tower, with a small spire, and containing a clock and a peal of ten bells. Is is said to have been built by the great John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster.

The town has many old buildings, for example The Black Boy Inn is a Queen Anne period building and Aylsham Old Hall was built in 1689. You can also find the remains of a windmill and former Workhouse.

Aylsham was the chief town for the manufacture of linen, then called Aylsham Webbs or Cloth of Aylsham. In the time of James I, this was superseded by the woollen manufacture, mainly knitting worsted stockings, breeches, and waistcoats. When frame-work knitting was introduced, the woollen manufacture also stopped.

Aylsham is famous for its Markets and Auctions where over many, many years many a bargain has been acquired.

In 1805, an earthen pot, containing 500 pieces of ancient silver coins, mainly groats and pennies were ploughed up in a field near Aylsham.

A pretty town with a wide variety of shops to delight the visitor, it is well worth taking the time to visit.
